Ariocarpus trigonus is quite frequent in the Palmillas area, and large plants occur. Plants in the western part of the Jaumave Valley tend to occupy a slightly different habitat to those in the east, being found mainly in low thorn scrub, as opposed to the frequently more open locations of those in the eastern part of the valley, they frequently attain sizes up to 25cm in diameter.
